An International Residency Partnership with Micromegas

27 Oct 2025

Micromégas is a media art residency co-organised by the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macau, Videotage, and cneai=. Designed as a recurring programme since 2021, the residency features an annual theme that fosters deeper cultural exchange between France and Hong Kong.

The 2025 edition focuses on the intersection of craftsmanship and technology, featuring artists who integrate manual craftwork and programmed production in their practices. This year, with HART HAUS and Yishu8 as Residency Partners, the programme brings together two artists — Mae Chan (Hong Kong) and Mona Cara (Paris) — for a cross-cultural exchange taking place in October and November. Both artists will research local textile artisanality and explore contemporary technologies available in their host cities.

Hong Kong-based multidisciplinary artist Mae Chan will undertake her residency at cneai= and Yishu8 in Paris, developing her textile sculpture project that integrates advanced tools such as 3D-printing, with traditional fibre techniques like wool carding and needle felting. Meanwhile, French artist Mona Cara, known for her hybrid textile works that explore the pictorial and sculptural dimensions of warp and weft, will be hosted at HART HAUS in Hong Kong, with research support from Videotage. She will study traditional weaving methods, while engaging with advanced textile design and development initiatives in the city.

They will share their exchange experiences through a public event at HART HAUS on 13 November (Thursday). Stay tuned for more information!

Their work samples and remixes folk and ornamental arts and their global transformations—from Orientalist kitsch to Art Nouveau to manga—to re-examine fantasies of the Other across canonical and outsider art histories. They have completed a Shaanxi Huaxian shadow puppetry apprenticeship under Master Wang Tianwen in Xi’an, China, and graduated from Berlin University of the Arts (UdK). They have exhibited in group exhibitions at ACUD Galerie, Berlin (2025), Tofu Space, Copenhagen (2025), PODIUM, Hong Kong (2024), James Fuentes Gallery, New York (2024), Franz Kaka, Toronto (2024), Bernheim, London (2023), A.I. Rivers of remembering, to the forgotten land

Looking for memories never lived from the land never stepped on, the time spent in the artist residency follows the Vltava River.

Through bodily recollection of a foreign land filled with unlived histories and indirect experiences, an atmosphere will be constructed through an installation of weaving threads, braiding beads, and fragmented drawings, among which moving images from reflections in Hong Kong and the Vltava River in Prague conversing in gaps of the space. Materials, reflections, and bodily encounters are placed in exchange, brewing kinship with layered memories.

“She wanted to see the Vltava.”

Your Spring is scattered over our Summer. Your hair joined with my hair. Her gaze tangled with your gaze. Unknown memories boil with unspoken words. I offer a river in search, rivers to be collected, and forgotten.

“To know we stray like a river and our faces vanish like water.”

About the Artist-in-Residence

Melody Qingmei Li 李清美

Melody Qingmei Li is an artist and writer based in Hong Kong. She constantly edits and translates threads of memories and the present, some of which grow into forms of writing while others are woven into various mediums including drawings, paintings, moving images, objects, and sculptures. She treats artistic practice as simple daily exercises to resist the spreading of amnesia and aphasia, and meanwhile to create possibilities for moments of resonance. She is interested in liminal spaces between the natural and the artificial, the body and the mind, and the individual and the system.

An International Artist Exchange with Artist and Curator Lenka Bakes

In collaboration with Prague Art Week, HART is delighted to announce an International Artist Exchange with artist and curator Lenka Bakes (b.1990, Czech Republic). During her artist residency at HART Haus, Bakes will present an Open Studio exhibiting a series of work based on her observation and field research in Hong Kong, in which one's self is intertwined with the vast tapestry of human history and culture. With a distinct vision of spiritual archeology that oscillates between internal introspection and external interpretations of reality, Lenka Bakes confronts the dimensions of our self-reflection against a backdrop of myth, history, space, and the tangible memory of the city. These influences converge to shape our reality and have continued to find its expressions in our cityscape and the daily surroundings. Working with photographs, literary snippets, artefacts, and natural objects, the artist dissects and reconstructs reality intertwined with the memory of the city and its inhabitants.

Lenka Bakes (b.1990) is an artist, curator, and director of the art festival Prague Art Week, who is well recognised in the contemporary art scene in the Czech Republic and Europe. She obtained a master’s degree from the Faculty of Art and Design at Jan Evangelista Purkyně University, where she studied in the Studio of Photography and Intermedia headed by Professor Pavel Baňka. She has exhibited in progressive galleries such as Like A Little Disaster in Italy, Below Grand Gallery in New York, and MeetFactory and Kvalitář in Prague. Her work was presented in the collective exhibitions Co-existence /symbiosis/ in Brussels and Symbiosis 2.0 in Hong Kong in spring 2023 as the VIP programme of Art Basel Hong Kong. She is represented by the Prague gallery Berlinskej Model, and her works are featured in the PPF ART Collection. As a writer, she is a regular contributor of Czech and international media such as VOGUE, ELLE, and Forbes, and she has managed several major international cultural events.

她曾在意大利的Like A Little Disaster、紐約的Below Grand Gallery以及布拉格的MeetFactory和Kvalitář等前衛畫廊展出。

In her spiritually archaeological work, Lenka Bakes analyses the layers that surround us in the material and immaterial world. Her work is formally based on the medium of photography, which she layers, bends, and deconstructs to achieve a multiplicity of perspectives. In terms of content, she constructs a perspective in her images that contains both internal and external reflections of reality. Her series of collages Adaptus, depicting inter-animal mutations, was created as part of her work with the artist group DUNA (2016–2022). Her series of three self-portraits, also titled Adaptus (2017–2023), in which she explores the permeability of the body and conscious epigenetics, is influenced by transcendental experiences during compassionate meditations. In her most recent series, Adaptus Archeology, Bakes confronts the dimensions of our self-reflection against a backdrop of myth, history, space, and the tangible memory of the city. These insights are inspired by her observations in cosmopolitan cities such as Hong Kong, Naples, and New York.
