Movie Screening and Sharing: Lens Blank Lens Blank

Presented by The Buoy
The Buoy

More and more contemporary art and design practices attempt to connect with the communities they are part of. This situation traverses the fields of socially-engaged art, or participatory/co-design. These fields share a need for the creative practitioner to recognize both their own vision and that of those that surround them. Being responsible to both is key.

The Buoy therefore provides a movie night, an opportunity for guests to watch two portraits of artists in relation to community. Two well-known documentary films by Les Blank will be screened. In them, the artist must design an image within the local community to fulfil their creative vision. Over the course of four hours, visitors can watch the stories unfold while retaining awareness to social boundaries, or lack thereof. During this time, visitors may also witness the work going on at Hart Haus. For, seeing behind the scenes within the "social studio" inevitably holds not just the final work, but the community it is made within. Come. Eat pizza. Watch movies. See the images being made.

Date: December 4, 2021 (Sat)
Time: 5PM - 9PM
Venue: HART Haus
Fee: Free*
Medium of Instruction: English

*A HK$100 deposit will be required for registration and the amount will be returned on event day

About the Artists

The Buoy

The Buoy was formed as a collaboration between Jen Yoohyun Lee and Marty Miller. The two independent practitioners wondered, “how could creative practice navigate times of uncertainty?” Rooted in personal histories of transitions, The Buoy aims to be present during times of flux by staying rooted but able to shift with the current of events. The Buoy consciously drifts across the blurred boundaries of visual culture through practicing socially-engaged art & design as well as photography and installation. The mission of The Buoy is to stay lighthearted yet stay engaged enough to look beneath the waves of change.

The Buoy

The Buoy 由 Jen Yoohyun Lee 和 Marty Miller 的合作創立。

“The Struggle toward the heights is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy.” - Albert Camus, The Myth of Sisyphus.

The global pandemic reshuffled our daily physical lives which led to a whole new inward discovery of the most fundamental self in the digital age. By demonstrating the omnipresent lingering of a "corporate world", the show wants to amplify the astonishment of the spectator by creating the compositions. The constant disagreement between our conscious and subconscious mind comes into dialogue in art creation, and in the process, a conflict resolved in composition. Public-___ (ex. housing, good, discourse, etc.). What does it mean for something to be public in Hong Kong? There are a lot of memories that do not exist and even the actual realised memory could be not real or just the edit someone chooses to believe. Modern art is getting ridiculous. “Really, my painting feels like an explosion of my hidden fear, including anger and lust these days.” She crossed her heart and rolled the dice. Can you come out on top on a hand dealt by Destiny?

公共–_(例如住房、商品、話語等)。

Amy Maria Tong is known for her abstract experimentation on still life and portraits. Her work is often a collage of idealised, multi-layered scenarios, expressing the emotional traces from her daily encounters with society. Making use of bold colours, a range of mark-making techniques, and diverse mediums, she creates textured environments to explore the complexity of human emotions within surrealist settings.

Sharu B. Sikdar

About Course Instructor

Zoie Lam
Zoie Lam is an artist based in Hong Kong . As the creator of the imaginary planet Zlism, she details a world with all its residents and happenings. Positive energy oozes out from the kind-hearted characters as they come alive under her pen, all with fascinating stories unfolding in one painting after another. “ZL”is the initial of Zoie Lam while “LISM” stands for her philosophy and ideas. Through her drawings, Zoie would like to express her ideas towards different social phenomena. Most of the artworks by Zoie Lam appear as a dense and intricate tapestry of patterns juxtaposed with vivid colours — a remarkable visual contrast for a signature style that sets Lam apart from the rest. Choosing acrylic paint and wool yarn, and occasionally oil-base marker and technical drawing pen for black-and-white effect, Lam always fills her stylistic paintings in brilliant hues and especially with florescent colours. All details are completed with refined brushstrokes and delicate lines under the fine pen tip. The canvas is then topped with hand-knitted finishing touches. Her another favorite art form is mural painting, which includes walls of shops and impromptu painting alongside real-time animation and performance. She had been invited to show case her art in Busan Art Fair, Affordable Art, Asia Contemporary Art Fair, Eslite book of Taiwan, etc. and promote arts and creativity with different institutions and companies including schools, HK Arts Development Council, Haven of Hope Hospital, CR2 903, Harbour City, Elements, PMQ, Samsung, IKEA, Vans, Converse, Levi’s, Adidas, Reebok.

Ane Alfeiran
Ane is a self-taught Mexican artist who, from a young age, found an escape in art and a forum in which to express her feelings, hopes and fears. As someone who continues to travel the globe, Ane draws on inspiration and technique from the different cities and cultures she has experienced. Ane takes us into the emotional world of each of her subjects, making each painting stand out with its own individual story. Through a deep personal connection present in her compositions, she aims to stimulate the viewer’s feelings and imagination and encourage them to create their own interpretation of what the art means to them.

CIP Final Project #1 - Casualty of Loss |「

Join us for Casualty of Loss - Final Project for HART Curatorship Incubation Programme in a showcase format presented by Olivia Lo and Ida Mak. Opening on Nov 2 at 5pm at HART Haus.

From “casual” to “a chance event” to “an unfortunate event”. How did the word ‘casualty’ derive from a light tone to such a negative connotation? Countless uncertainties have been raised during this difficult time around the world. We have experienced loss of many kinds: loss of loved ones, loss of identity, loss of relationship, loss of feelings, loss of direction... We are all casualties of loss. But can we possibly turn this idea around? Casualty of Loss is an exploratory experience that questions and challenges the potential spectrum of “Loss”. Can we turn away the pessimistic association from “casualty” and “loss”, and add an uplifting spirit to these two words?

Hart Hub #10: The Discovery of A Secret Language | 《

Embroidery is not merely a handicraft exclusive to households, but an art medium which is often overlooked. Agnes Richter in the Victorian Era embroidered her struggles with repeated and elusive stitches on a jacket, indigenous women in Central America embroider patterns on their traditional garment “Huipil” to signify their cultural identity and history. Embroidery is remarkable for its aesthetic and flexibility, and therefore its extensive usage. Throughout history, humans have been using embroidery as a channel to present their identities, or even transmit secret languages. How could we use such intimate language as embroidery, to record, share, and reshape our emotions?

In the workshop “The Discovery of A Secret Language”, Mexican artist Ane Alfeiran will invite the participants to resonate with the secret language of embroidery works in history, to allow the participants to explore embroidering lines, patterns, or even text, to create your own secret languages. In the full day workshop, the artist will tutor several basic embroidering techniques, participants will then embroider on a canvas, to hide their own resilient secret message in their creation. In the later session of the workshop the artist will guide the participants to collaborate and deliver their own secret messages, at the end to sublimate the art pieces through creation, erasure, and replication. The embroidery pieces from the participants will be eventually stitched into a giant collaborative work, and the aesthetics of embroidery will be presented.

The collaborative outcome of the workshop will be presented to the public in the HART Social Studio showcase in the end of the year.

Workshop Details

In this 2-encounters workshop, the artist instructor will first give a small talk about some of the secret language we can find on embroidery, an overlooked work of art that tells us a part of history that has passed unnoticed. Participants will be invited to create an artwork, using embroidery on their old clothings, and by hiding their own resilient secret message in their creation, they are to create, erase, reproduce and preserve memories in collaboration.

About Course Instructor

Amy Maria Tong
Amy Maria Tong is known for her abstract experimentation on still life and portraits. Her work is often a collage of idealised, multi-layered scenarios, expressing the emotional traces from her daily encounters with society. Making use of bold colours, a range of mark-making techniques, and diverse mediums, she creates textured environments to explore the complexity of human emotions within surrealist settings.

About Course Instructor

Sya Chan
As a professional medical staff, Sya is also a healer. She studied nutritions and MSc in nursing at the university, and has been working on the frontline since then, taking care of patients who have physical and mental issues. Her work has given her lots of inspirations.

On the other hand, Sya was brought up with musical trainings. After receiving her postgraduate certificate in music therapy, Sya went to Europe and received training in sound therapy and cell recovery techniques from sound healing masters of Denmark. In recent years, Sya went to Kyoto in Japan, and learned about reiki (chi) directly from the Usui discipline, and has become a recognised master in reiki. Thankful for all the encounters in life, Sya regards healing herself and the public as the prime mission in life, and she hopes to bring broader benefits to more people.
