“Memoria of the Sea — A Living Archive Project” is a touring exhibition that transforms the concept of a boat into a vessel of collective memory. Choosing HART Haus as her second station, she was inspired by the relationship between Aberdeen’s fishermen and the relocation of the Kennedy Town Fish Market; this poetic installation invites audiences to view our coastline not just as a scenic backdrop, but as a site deeply shaped by labor, migration, and history.
A Sustainable, Collaborative Masterpiece
Brought to life through a unique collaboration between artist Gisèle Tchitchiama and The Foundry of The Harbour School (THS) , the structure is intricately crafted from bamboo, recycled materials, and reclaimed fishing nets. Guided by THS specialist Dean Lea, alongside students and architectural assistants, the team successfully translated a profound conceptual conversation into a tangible, eco-conscious reality.
Lifeworthy Learning and Evolving Dialogue
“Memoria is the future of the past,” says Tchitchiama, emphasising the importance of materializing collective dreams for future generations. The project beautifully embodies THS’s commitment to "lifeworthy learning," offering a thought-provoking platform that honors our oceans while challenging the community to think critically about environmental sustainability.
Join the Living Archive
Functioning as a "poetic boat," the installation invites active public participation to help build an invaluable archive of Hong Kong’s maritime soul. Visitors are welcome to write their personal reflections of the sea on prepared wood and seaweed paper, placing them within crab baskets to foster an evolving, inter-generational dialogue between past and present.
(The Foundary of The Harbour School)
