Colour is one of the most important elements of visual art, and at the same time, it is a gateway for us to appreciate the world. Colour can also stimulate creative thinking and imagination. There will be four sessions in this workshop : 1. Colour in Seeing, 2. Colour in Thinking, 3. Colour in Feeling, 4. Colour in Surrounding. Through reading colour and appreciating life, let us breakthrough our inertial thinking, begin a new conversation with ourselves and explore the true colour that one needs.

This workshop is also ideal for participants who wish to ease their mind, and to better listen to their inner voice and emotional needs, with experiences consisting of observation, creation, and meditation.

In Dialogue with Nadim Abbas: From HAUS to Household

In the lead up to and during Household Gods, the first exhibition resulting from HART Social Studio, a series of conversations the curator and artists live-streamed from HART Haus and HART Hall, will offer behind-the-scenes access and insights.

The previous livestream conversations focused on the art practices of the other three participating artists in exhibition Household Gods, and in this post-opening dialogue, Nadim Abbas would like to explore on how the process of making of the exhibition sheds lights on the current developments on creativity in Hong Kong. As a Hausian, Abbas will also reveal his thoughts and feelings engaging in HART Social Studio.

About the Artist

Nadim Abbas examines the mercurial properties of images and their ambiguous relationship to reality.  This has culminated in the construction of complex set pieces where objects disappear into their own image and bodies succumb to the seduction of space.  Abbas was awarded with the Asian Cultural Council Altius Fellowship and the HK Arts Development Award (Young Artist / Visual Arts) in 2014.

Past exhibitions include: Participation Mystique (McaM, Shanghai), Phantom Plane (Tai Kwun, Hong Kong), Poor Toy (VITRINE, Basel), Proregress (12th Shanghai Biennale), Blue Noon (Last Tango, Zurich), Clouds⇄Forests (7th Moscow International Biennale of Contemporary Art), Camoufleur (VITRINE, London), Chimera (Antenna Space, Shanghai), The Last Vehicle (UCCA, Beijing), 2015 Triennial: Surround Audience (New Museum, New York), Unseen Existence (HK Arts Centre), Going, going, until I meet the tide (2014 Busan Biennale), The Part In The Story Where A Part Becomes A Part Of Something Else (Witte de With, Rotterdam), Tetraphilia (Third Floor Hermés, Singapore).

In Dialogue with Tap Chan: On Materiality as a Contextual Framework of Art Making

In the lead up to and during Household Gods, the first exhibition resulting from HART Social Studio, a series of conversations the curator and artists live-streamed from HART Haus and HART Hall, will offer behind-the-scenes access and insights.

The works of art created by Tap Chan reflect her consistent in-depth study on material application. Constantly investigating the different facets and characteristics of materiality, medium and media, she explores how these characteristics enrich the contents or expression of her creations, as well as how these qualities help evolve her art making. One may say that the dedicated research on matters, textures and materials has become Chan’s art language. Spectators can learn about the close relation and connection of her works with space and environment, as we slowly discover and observe more of her practices.

Chan tends to develop her concepts and approaches of realising her works gradually. As we read her art with an open mind, we can better understand how it suggests both positivities and negativities in our everyday experience, at the same time learning how these abstract, simple and poetic representations enrich our comprehension of the complexities of the world, of visual cultures and of contemporary art.

About the Artist

Tap Chan born in Hong Kong, currently lives and works in Hong Kong. She received her B.A fine art from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in 2011 and an M.A. in Visual Arts from the Hong Kong Baptist University in 2014. Her works mostly appear in the form of installations, videos and sculptures. She is interested in exploring the idea of liminality that is embedded in daily life, where the boundaries between fiction and reality are often blurred, like the undefined psychic and emotional ruptures experienced during bouts of insomnia. To construct a narrative of the subterranean mind that rumbles beneath the facade of modern existence.

She was funded by Hong Kong Arts Development Council cultural exchange project in 2017 for her solo exhibition "A Soft Note" in Singapore and has participated in Hong Kong Sculpture Biennial 2016, a solo intervention “444”, group show "Underline" in Netherlands and is currently showing in Tai Kwun Contemporary HK.

In Dialogue with Shane Aspegren: On Frequencies, Perception, and Matter

In the lead up to and during Household Gods, the first exhibition resulting from HART Social Studio, a series of conversations the curator and artists live-streamed from HART Haus and HART Hall, will offer behind-the-scenes access and insights.

Ever since Shane Aspegren joined HART Social Studio, the artist has been continuing the experimental approach, that connects his various practices — focusing largely on human perception, while also deepening his exploration of the material. HART team, as an observant and supporter, is quite conscious about how standards and precision continue to play significant roles in this process, as does the feedback from his audience and participants in his Holistic Sound (a.k.a. sound/mind/matter) sessions. This ongoing research has been crucial to a personal artistic development, while also resonating in other socially creative aspects, through invaluable interactions, idea exchange and practical critique. ⁣⁣⁣
⁣⁣⁣
In this conversation, let us all discover more on our comprehension (and/or imagination) of the subject matter made available by Shane’s artworks. ⁣⁣⁣

About the Artist

Shane Aspegren’s work juxtaposes improvisational languages within carefully-crafted frameworks, frequently exploring a cross-discipline and non-dualistic perspective on such topics as consciousness, ritual, group dynamics, societal customs, and human response to natural phenomena.

Aspegren is largely known for his practices related to music and sound, which often play an integral part in his installations, images, videos, objects, and performances. Interested in the relational aesthetics of every form, he often uses interactive and collaborative methods of creation, as well as the practical application of those methods, such as his ongoing work with meditative practices — specifically the effects of sound waves and its effects on the human mind and physical matter of the body.

As a musician/ composer, he has performed hundreds of concerts worldwide, in addition to an extensive recorded discography. His artworks have been presented, commissioned, collected, and performed at institutions, museums, and galleries throughout Asia, Europe and North America.

In the lead up to and during Household Gods, the first exhibition resulting from HART Social Studio, a series of conversations the curator and artists live-streamed from HART Haus and HART Hall, will offer behind-the-scenes access and insights.

Wu Jiaru is one of the very few Hausians who has been engaging to HART Haus Social Studio for over a year - the transformations of her art making always intrigued the HART team, we observe the influences and exchanges that she impacted the evolving community in the studio, and vice versa. Taking this opportunity producing the exhibition with her, we would like to learn about how the artist perceives her own approaches and practices in art making, hoping to also discover more on her views on spectators’ responses.

In the same occasion, HART invited two of our community members to join the conversation - Rose Fu, our intern from CUHK New Asia College, and Cassie Liu, our young student Hausian , the fresh graduate from HKBU Academy of Visual Arts, who is also the winner of HART Award for Moving Image at the 2020 Graduate Show.

The Dew: Workshop 練習 #3 - Touch 觸 | Discovering Yourself through Natural Dye 從天然染中尋找自己

(Chinese version below)

In the process of natural dyeing, mother nature provides us the ingredients, while our predecessors share with us the legacy of deriving pigments. We learn about each plant that can be used for the extraction of dyeing materials, and we aquaire colours from nature. In the end, we use our hands to "dye" this pure, simple beauty of mutual respect onto the fabric.

Drinking tea is like practising natural dye - it is through meditation, slowing down, and relaxation that we can look into our heart, and discover our true self. Among all the "seven household necessities" in traditional Chinese belief since the Tang Dynasty, "tea" is regarded as the must-do in daily life. Through this series of workshops, participants can understand more about plants that can make tea and dyes, while learning to see natural dye as a day-to-day process to restore the tranquility of our mind.

There are two levels in this series of workshops - beginners and advanced, which the participants can choose from.

The Dew: Workshop 練習 #1 - Light 光 | The Fluidity of Light 流光

(Chinese version below)

Do you still remember, when was the last time you looked up at the sky? Yesterday? A week or a month ago? Looking up is just a very natural and simple action to lift your head upward. Your eyes are wide with the surprise of what you are seeing at that moment - sometimes with the blissful cloudless blue sky, sometimes with dramatically cloudy, or sporadically with the peaceful halo when the moon rises.

Whatever we see we look at, light is the first crucial element helping us to discover more about our surroundings. Light is also the fundamental element, which is so intensely a part of our being, that we can’t even imagine our life without.

Through this workshop, participants will first take a field trip with our instructor, where they will be guided to discover innovative ways to capture light in our daily environment with creative tools. In the second part of the workshop, participants will create their own light installations through a site specific audio experience.

Let's reconsider the existence of light from its physical nature, to a more sentimental comprehensive perspective - its linkage to our feelings, memories and personal stories. We anticipate your engagement in the sharing and discussions to co-create this journey with us.

HART x SAF: Developing an Expressive-arts Programme

The Sovereign Art Foundation’s Make It Better (MIB) programme works with young children in some of Hong Kong’s socio-economically deprived communities, running workshops that offer empowering learning activities reinforced by expressive-arts. In this session Yana Ng, registered Art Therapist and Lead Course Planner for the MIB programme, will discuss some of the challenges that individuals and organisations can face when developing an expressive-arts programme. Practical skills will be covered in an hour-long workshop to follow the initial presentation.

The event will be conducted in English.

Date: 29th February, 2020 (Saturday)
Time: 10am to 12pm
Venue: HART Haus
Capacity: 15 persons
*Participants are requested to bring with them a bag with 5 recycled or natural items for the art-making activity.*

About the Organisers

HART
Established in 2018, HART is a new arts initiative to explore art and space and artful community catalysts. Through the HART collective of art spaces, we aim to revitalise a culture of creativity with active participation and focus on the process of hands-on making. Over time HART will encompass an experimental and evolving platform of programmes and arts spaces in Hong Kong.

The Sovereign Art Foundation
The Sovereign Art Foundation (SAF) was established in 2003 with a well-defined twin focus: to recognise the growing wealth of contemporary art talent in Asia and bring the proven benefits of expressive arts to disadvantaged children. The beauty of this model is that we can achieve both goals in an eminently sustainable way. The Sovereign Asian Art Prize – now the largest and most established contemporary art prize in Asia-Pacific – raises funds by auctioning artworks that reach the final stage of the competition. Proceeds are then shared equally between the artists and the Foundation, to fund charitable projects across Asia.
