Artist Workshop: Imitation and Creative Mineral Pigment Painting Workshop

Mineral pigment painting and gongbi painting each carry their own distinctive artistic language and historical lineage. This course begins with the Song dynasty classic flower-and-bird painting Camellias and Butterflies. While preserving its elegant forms and refined composition, participants will freely reinterpret it through the expressive language of contemporary mineral pigment painting.

Over three days,  participants will not only savour the subtle and exquisite spirit of Song dynasty flower-and-bird art, but also explore in depth the rich textures, luminosity, and layered depth of mineral pigments. You will master key techniques, including raised powder (li fen), glazing, surface polishing, and gold leaf application.

By the end of the workshop, every participant will complete a unique mineral pigment artwork that harmoniously blends classical elegance with contemporary aesthetics — a piece to treasure and take home.

This workshop will be hosted by HART Studio Artist Elsa Ngai.

About the Artist

Elsa Ngai graduated from The Chinese University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor of Arts in 2024. Her graduation work explores the boundary between reality and illusion through the reconfiguration of memory images, constructing an unsettling psychological world beneath a calm exterior. Her works often involve stacking and polishing mineral pigments to blur the sense of time, using intuition and sketches to express the aura of objects.

Textile Art Workshop: Felt Memories「

Bring the fleeting into the tangible! In this meditative workshop, we set aside the traditional brush and embrace the tactile possibilities of wool. By treating loose fibres as pigments, participants will explore the rhythm of wet felting to trace the textures of the inner world, transforming intimate emotions and personal histories into a textile landscape of structural form.

To make your work even more meaningful, we invite participants to bring their pet’s shed fur or small, significant fabric swatches. We will blend these directly into the wet felting process, weaving a unique physical trace of your life into the final composition.

No prior experience is needed. Simply bring your curiosity and a willingness to shape the intangible into something real.

This workshop will be hosted by Mae Chan, HART Studio Artist and founder of Felt with Hands.

About the Artist

Mae Chan (b.1991) graduated from the Royal College of Art with an MA in Textiles. Her practice is a multi-disciplinary fusion of textiles, sculpture and craft.

Rooted in the poetic, narrative, and artisanal traditions, Chan's mixed-media sculptures reframe objects within different contexts of intimacy, boundary, and judgment. Playing with the semiotics of form and touch, she dissects subtle emotional shifts, leveraging the human form as a foundational metaphor.

Chan received the 'Developing Your Creative Practice' Grant from Arts Council England. She was a finalist nominee for the 2021 Ingram Prize. Her work has been exhibited in Thrown (UK), London Craft Week (UK), Visual Arts Scotland (UK), Unit 1 Gallery | Workshop (UK), Young Space Views (UK), Kühlhaus (Germany), Søndre Green (Norway) and HART (HK).

Talk and Workshop 講座及工作坊 — The sea, infinite inspiration, subtle reminiscence

Dive into the vast, whispering depths of the ocean, where the sea’s endless inspiration awakens your creative spirit. Led by artist Gisèle Tchitchiama, who paints freedom through color and gesture and shapes memory with her hands, this program begins with an artist talk, followed by an interactive collage workshop, inviting you to explore the ocean’s enduring themes of identity, memory, and care through both reflection and making.

In the talk, you will explore the creative and collaborative journey behind Memoria of the Sea. The session traces the evolution of the installation and examines the intersection of sustainability and reclaimed materials, the power of teamwork, and the ways art connects with community memory and maritime identity. By bringing together making and meaning, this program offers a balanced experience of artistic practice and conceptual insight, allowing you to take home your own personal “voice of the sea.”

This will be followed by a workshop, where you will transform sustainable and recycled materials, including bamboo, plastic, rope, and paper, into poetic artworks of your own, crafting small fish or vibrant sea creatures. No prior experience is required. Let your intuition guide you as you learn to listen to the unique textures of the materials and embrace the ocean’s rich diversity through hands-on creation.

The talk will be led by Gisèle Tchitchiama, who will also facilitate the workshop, with Polly Chow, Head of Marketing and Community Education at HART HAUS, serving as moderator.

Michael Rikio Ming Hee Ho: Poetry Writing Workshops

Michael Rikio Ming Hee Ho’s workshop invites participants to approach his writing not as “poetry” in the traditional sense, but as an exploration of how private thoughts, jokes, anxieties, and fleeting moments of honesty take shape as language. The session considers how sentiment shifts across different contexts, and how meaning changes once words are written and materialized.

Rather than focusing on polemic statements or self-affirming platitudes, the workshop turns toward the strange intimacy of how people speak to themselves. By the end of the workshop, participants will create a small text-based work that examines how a sentence transforms once it is no longer simply read, but distorted and given physical form.

Michael Rikio Ming Hee Ho

If Hong Kong had its own fairytale, what would it look like? In Double Blue, artist Florence Yuk-ki Lee transforms the city into two shifting blues, sea and sky, where history and emotion overlap. Through animation and installation, the work invites viewers to reimagine Hong Kong as an unfinished and continually rewritten “hetero-tale”.

Open Studio - Eating Together

Eating Together is an open studio by HART Studio and Mexican artist Ane Alfeirán exploring memory through food, gesture, and collective participation. Conceived as a participatory activation centered around a shared banquet, the event invites visitors to reflect on how memories persist not necessarily because they are accurate, but because they continue to be activated through the body and shared experience. Guests are welcome to arrive at any time during the event and stay for as little or as long as they wish, as the activation will take place continuously throughout the open studio.

Guests are welcome to bring an object, scent, food item, or even a photo on their phone that holds a personal memory. Each gesture will be documented through Polaroid photographs, forming a collective archive of hands holding objects, foods, and images.

This open studio is presented as part of the Laboratorio de Acompañamiento a Procesos Creativos, a program directed by artist and curator Selma Guisande and developed in collaboration with Fundación AVCINE and Salón Sangremal Gallery.

Join us at this Book Talk: The Center Lies on the Outside: Rirkrit Tiravanija and the Art of Noji (Croma Editions, 2025), welcoming speakers from South Korea and based in Japan! The book brings together stories formed around Next Door to the Museum, a rural farmhouse turned artist residency in Jeju, South Korea, reflecting on land-based living inspired by site-specific work by Rirkrit Tiravanija, commissioned for the 3rd Jeju Biennale.

誠邀你參加即將舉行的書籍講座:《The Center Lies on the Outside:Rirkrit Tiravanija 與爐址的藝術》(出版:Croma Editions,2025年),請來韓國和駐日本講者。

About the Speakers

Yujin Lee (b. 1986 in Daegu, Korea) is an interdisciplinary artist based in Jeju Island. She received a BFA from Cornell University and an MFA in Visual Arts from Columbia University. After living in Berlin and New York, Lee relocated to Jeju, where she purchased and renovated a farmhouse that now serves as both her home and an alternative artist residency, Next Door to the Museum. Lee is currently pursuing a PhD in Cultural Mediation at Yonsei University in Seoul. Her research draws on autoethnography and international case studies to examine how artists living and working in rural contexts create public spaces that critically engage with ecological degradation and hyperconsumerist culture.

Hyesu Cho (b. 1993, raised in Busan) is an independent curator and researcher working between South Korea and Japan. Her practice explores invisible presences—memories, relations, and the undercommons—through feminist and postcolonial approaches to East Asian contemporary art. She studied Creative Writing at the Seoul Institute of the Arts and is currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Arts Studies and Curatorial Practices at Tokyo University of the Arts. Alongside her curatorial and Korean-Japanese translation work, she also works as a sanitation worker in Tokyo, an experience that informs her thinking on labor, visibility, and communal life.

Hyesu Cho(1993

Mae Chan

Mae Chan (b.1991) graduated from the Royal College of Art with an MA in Textiles. Her practice is a multi-disciplinary fusion of textiles, sculpture and craft.

Rooted in the poetic, narrative, and artisanal traditions, Chan's mixed-media sculptures reframe objects within different contexts of intimacy, boundary, and judgment. Playing with the semiotics of form and touch, she dissects subtle emotional shifts, leveraging the human form as a foundational metaphor.

PODIUM, HART Haus, and Eaton HK are proud to announce a strategic partnership that bridges the gallery, not-for-profit, and hospitality sectors. Launching alongside the coming solo exhibition ‘World of Interiors’ of Berlin-based, Ürümqi-born artist Min-Jia that opens on 20 September, this collaboration aims to spark fresh dialogues through contemporary art, pioneering new collaborative models in Hong Kong’s vibrant art ecosystem.

As part of the residency collaboration, Min-Jia will host a Puppet-Making Workshop, where participants will explore the rich tradition of Chinese shadow puppetry. Over two engaging sessions, attendees will learn about traditional materials and techniques while creating their own hybrid snake puppets. The workshop will focus on the theme of transformation, inviting participants to connect with the artistry of shadow play through hands-on experience using vellum, the material central to Min-Jia’s practice.
